The discussion surrounding well-being in the workplace has intensified in recent years. The workplace faces a range of challenges that affect both employers and employees. Among these, well-being plays a central role. It concerns not only work-life balance, but also mental health care, stress management, and the creation of a healthy work environment.
Although this is an issue that affects us all, we often shy away from addressing it. Implementing wellness practices means redesigning processes, reorganizing schedules, introducing new policies, and many organizations avoid making changes because they view them as too complex or as a luxury.
However, well-being isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.
In Greece, where family, culture, and human connection are deeply rooted values, quality of life remains an integral part of our identity. And yet, the consequences of the economic crisis and the pandemic have profoundly affected the balance between work and our personal time. Working hours have increased, as has stress, while mental health issues are now emerging with alarming frequency.
The main challenges
Work-life balance: Despite the steps that have been taken, particularly in the private sector, to promote work-life balance, more substantive and practical solutions are still needed. It is not enough to simply have a policy; it must also be put into practice.
Mental health: Research shows that a large percentage of the Greek workforce is exposed to stressors in the workplace. Stress, emotional exhaustion, and symptoms of depression are common occurrences.
Economic factors: Low wages and financial insecurity, excessive workloads and understaffing, the high cost of living, and macroeconomic uncertainty combine to create a reality that directly affects employees’ well-being. In the workplace, this translates to increased stress and burnout. A decline in active engagement, innovation, and overall work quality. Increased absenteeism and low staff retention, as well as difficulty attracting talent, especially in competitive markets.
What is already in place and what can we do
In recent years, an increasing number of organizations have recognized that well-being is a strategic priority:
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) provide access to mental health support services, offering employees counseling services and stress management tools.
Wellness initiatives are emerging in more and more organizations, not as token gestures, but as a strategic choice, ranging from office workouts to seminars on nutrition and mindfulness.
Promoting work-life balance by creating an environment where flexible working hours, clear boundaries, and a culture of respect become a daily reality for all employees.
Addressing financial stressors by providing employees with the confidence and tools to respond with certainty to the challenges of everyday life, reducing stress and creating an environment where they can perform calmly and effectively.
From theory to practice
The real question is how well-being is transformed from theory into daily practice. Our own experience, after 19 years at INGENIO, has taught us that a one-off programme or a token policy on paper is not enough. Well-being requires consistency, a healthy work environment, and above all, a philosophy that puts people at the centre.
At INGENIO, we don’t view “well-being” as just another amenity. For us, wellbeing means creating an environment where our people have a meaningful role, real opportunities for learning and growth, fair recognition of their efforts, and the conditions to maintain balance, respect, and flexibility in their daily lives. This is how we view work.
In practice, this means:
- We give our people the opportunity to learn, grow, and progress through continuous training and mentoring.
- We offer meaningful and responsible projects so that every member feels they have a role to play and a contribution to make.
- We promote work-life balance through practical solutions, such as flexible work arrangements/teleworking during the workweek.
- We have an open-door policy. We foster an environment of mutual respect, where collaboration and support are not just theories but a daily reality.
- We ensure fair and competitive compensation, as well as additional benefits (private health insurance, meal vouchers, etc.).
And we’re not stopping there. We continue to seek new ways to improve our well-being at work, through initiatives that strengthen and promote our physical and mental health, foster environmentally responsible practices in the workplace, and support the continuous training and development of our skills.
Our goal is to make the daily work experience more meaningful for our people by creating an environment that supports, empowers, and provides opportunities for growth. This way, well-being isn’t just a theory, but becomes part of our everyday lives.
Looking forward
If we want to create a healthier and more sustainable work environment in Greece, it is time to put well-being at the heart of our workplace culture.
When well-being is integrated into the daily work experience, employees feel supported, are motivated to progress, and can perform with calm and creativity. From this perspective, well-being lays the foundation for building strong, sustainable, and truly people-centered businesses.
