How easily can you compare your sales this year with sales up to the same date last year?

How easily can you do this for a specific category of products or services?

How easily can you track your company’s key indicators, beyond basic accounting indicators, such as customer balances or sales turnover?

Documentation:

Strategic decisions can be based on objective data and facts. In contrast to the subjective experiences and circumstances of everyday life. There is only one thing that is true for everyone: data.

Speed:

Questions concerning the performance of the company’s operation can be answered immediately.

Sustainability:

The growth of a company need not be based on hunches or gut feelings. It can be based on reliable indicators.

Methodology

First step: Definition of strategic metrics and indicators, which, when monitored, provide a significant advantage to the enterprise. As well as identification of the dimensions that allow for in-depth analysis of the above values and indicators. For example, time, geography, customer and product categorisation.

Second step: Identifying the required data. Specifically, arranging data into special structures that allow for quick calculation of values. Regardless of which dimension we want to analyse them from. That will lead to the creation of reports and graphs. As well as to training in creating ad hoc user reports and graphs.

Tools

Back end

(not visible to user)

SQL Server: Most enterprises have it as an operational software database engine (ERP, CRM, etc.).

They are not aware that it is more than that: it incorporates business intelligence tools:

  • Integration Services
  • Reporting Services
  • Analysis Services

Front end

(user-operated analysis tool):

Excel: The software we are all familiar with provides special analysis tools, the most common being Pivot Tables and graphs. Indeed, Excel in itself is a powerful analysis tool if linked to company data. Either directly to the OLTP database (e.g. that of the ERP, CRM, etc.) or to the company’s Data Warehouse.

Power BI: Power BI is a collection of services and applications that are used to convert unconnected data sources into knowledge via interactive tables and graphs.
